„During a residency in Cairo, Siepert resided in the heart of a cosmopolitan sphere. Right next to a monumental House of Justice, he faced the daily coercions of people in motion, cars in motion, sounds in motion; and yet to capture all that noise, Siepert decided to head in a vertical direction; The rooftops of Cairo.

Siepert’s escapism took him to the rooftops of residential buildings where he found luxurious apartments but similarly those who built their simple barracks on the rooftops as they can/could not afford a “normal” apartment in that neighbourhood. As different as the life of these people might be, one thing they share is the view over their city.

The artist was seeking to depict the beauty of an aged and decaying city and paying homage to this ideal, before taking the pictures Siepert took the films and scratched/damaged them with Cairo’s dust. The Photographs are not altered digitally in any way.“
